The Fatherless

Disturbingly common question and answer when I’m taking a medical history:

“And what about your dad, does he have any medical problems?”

“Well, I never really knew my dad, so I’m not sure.”

Lord, help us.

“Father of the fatherless and protector of widows
is God in his holy habitation.
God settles the solitary in a home;
he leads out the prisoners to prosperity,
but the rebellious dwell in a parched land.”
-Psalm 68:5-6 (ESV)

  1. I volunteer as a Bible study leader at my local youth detention center, and the absence of a positive father figure is the single most common denominator these kids share. Many do not know their dads at all. It’s absolutely devastating to every facet of their lives, and heartbreaking to see the effects. They are some of the most wounded, hurting people in our society. It’s such an honor to introduce them to Jesus, the Best Friend they will ever have, and His perfect Father, God, who wants to be their perfect Dad as well.

    • That’s really cool Lisa. It’s amazing the way the Lord can transform lives, even when they’re horribly broken. I really do think that lack of fathers is a major problem in society, and a boy who lacked a father will likely be a bad father himself. Only our Lord can break the cycle.
